Zaheer Khan: The comeback man in IPL 2015

Zaheer Khan has been written off many a times. Whenever he suffers injury –and I must admit that like any Indian pacer he suffers injuries far too often – cricket analysts start writing his cricketing obituary. But he seems to have learned some lessons in life and one of those is that never read newspapers too seriously and instead concentrate on basics.

Now, when he was completely written off and almost forgotten despite his great stature in the Indian cricket, he seems to have comeback unexpectedly, shocking many of his detractors, but not his fans.

Notwithstanding the fact that he has been absent from cricket field for a long time, he is still a force and continues to be on the nerves for opposition batsmen.

He seems to have won a very important match for his IPL team Delhi Daredevils against top team of the tournament Chennai Super Kings yesterday. Zaheer came out with superb performance and gave clinical figures of 4-1-9-2. He was the one man show yesterday and singlehandedly helped his side restrict CSK to 119 for 6. Later, they chased down the modest target easily with 3.2 overs to spare.

After his dream performance, the old warhorse said, “I had to be patient. I had to keep believing in myself that I can make a comeback. Obviously it is frustrating at times when it takes longer than normal, and in my case it took almost about a year for me to come back. But I always had faith in my abilities and I just kept believing that and I kept working”.

Zaheer went on to add, “When I had started playing, I used to go up to senior bowlers and ask them (and learn) through their experiences. When people who have already played at the highest level share their experiences with you, it always goes a long way. And it is something which I have been trying to continue”.

He dismissed Indian captain MS Dhoni on his first ball itself. While talking about it he says, “That’s the way the game goes. He is a very good batsman, especially in the death overs; so you’ve just got to have a clear plan against him. Some days it works for you some days it doesn’t. Today was one of those days when it worked for me.”
