World Health Day Celebrated

Aligarh: Delivering lecture on the occasion of Ninth Professor Nasim Ansari Memorial Oration and World Health Day, Prof Mohd Zaheer (Former Chairman, Dept. of Community Medicine and Principal, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU) shared many aspects of the personality of Prof Ansari. The lecture was organized by Ibne Sina Academy of Medieval Medicine and Sciences, Aligarh.

He briefed that both of them joined the college in 1964 and since then, maintained cordial relationship.

“Prof Ansari belonged to a very respected family of “Firangi Mahal” in Lucknow, which is famous for both religious and political activities and was visited by Mahatma Gandhi,” said Prof Zaheer.

“Prof Ansari as a teacher and administrator, worked hard for the progress of the AMU’s Medical College,” said Prof Zaheer who later shared some personal anecdotes in relation to Prof Ansari. His lecture was very well appreciated by all the participants.

Welcoming guests and speakers, Prof Hakim Syed Zillur Rahman, Founder President, Ibn Sina Academy, said that the Academy has been celebrating ‘World Health Day’ for many years.

Prof. Zulfia Khan (Former Chairman, Department of Community Medicine) spoke on the significance of World Health Day. She covered all facets of food safety right from farm to plate. She highlighted that food safety is a shared responsibility and taking safe food is our moral right! She discussed some common food-borne diseases and areas where misuse of chemicals, preservatives and antibiotics are being carried out.

Prof Anis Ismail, Dean Students Welfare, AMU, on behalf of MEDICS, shared his views and threw light on the activities and objectives of MEDICS.

Dr Uma Shankar Varshney, President Elect, Indian Medical Association, Aligarh Branch, presided over the function and gave valuable remarks about both lectures. Dr S Ziaur Rahman, Associate Professor, Pharmacology Department conducted the programme, while Dr S Mohsin Raza moved for vote of thanks on behalf of Ibn Sina Academy and MEDICS.

The programme was jointly organized by Ibn Sina Academy and MEDICS. Large number of teachers including Prof Saeeduzzafar Chaghtai, Prof Fasih Ahmad Siddiqui, Prof Wazahat Husain, Prof Anis Ahmad Ansari, Prof Abdul Mobin Khan, Prof Saud Ali Khan, Mr Zahoor Mohammad, Dr Abdul Latif, Prof M Shoaib Zaheer, Prof M Athar Ansari, Dr Safdar Ashraf, Dr Piyush Singh, Dr Salman Shah, Dr Saira Mehnaz, Dr Abdul Aziz, Dr Abdur Rauf and Dr Jameel Ahmad attended the event. An exhibition of WHO kits on past and present themes of World Health Day were also arranged.

Since 2007, Professor Nasim Ansari Memorial Oration lecture has been organized every year on ‘World Health Day’ in Aligarh Muslim University along with other activities commemorating the establishment of World Health Organization. Prof Ansari is remembered as an eminent founder, Faculty of the Medical College at Aligarh Muslim University. He commanded great respect in the Medical College community as well as the university at large. The Academy organizes this annual event to cherish his memories.

The Theme for this year’s ‘World Health Day’ was ‘Food Safety’.
