Workshop on Earthquake disaster and its mitigation held at AMU

Aligarh: The Department of Civil Engineering, Z H College of Engineering & Technology, Aligarh Muslim University organized the National Workshop on “Earthquake Disaster and Its Mitigation” under the auspices of the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP-II).

Prof. Mohammed Arif, Chairman, Department of Civil Engineering welcomed the guests, resource persons and participants. Prof. Rajnish Prakash, mentor of TEQIP-II was the Chief Guest and Prof. Mohibullah, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technoloy was the guest of honor on the occasion.

Prof. Manish Shrikhande, Department of Earthquake Engineering, IIT-Roorkee delivered a lecture on “Engineering for Earthquake Effects” during the workshop. In his lecture, he focused on keeping a check on the standards followed during the building construction in the country keeping in view the provisions of the Indian Standard Code. Prof Shrikhande also showed various demonstrations of buildings construction across the country where codal provisions are effectively not followed.

Prof. Chandan Ghosh, Head, GHRMD, NIDM, New Delhi, while delivering a lecture on “Vulnerability Assessment For Buildings by Rapid Visual Screening”, described the genesis of earthquakes in Himalayan regions and their impact on the buildings. He also explained various earthquake resistant designs given in Indian Standard Codes as well as about the earthquake resilience measures to be taken by the Government and the community.

Prof. Khalid Moin, Department of Civil Engineering, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi delivered a lecture on “Lessons and Experiences from Nepal Earthquake (2015)”. During his lecture, he referred to the damages caused to the buildings during the Nepal earthquake in April, 2015. Prof Moin also highlighted that there was only one strong motion seismograph available at the US embassy in Nepal during the calamity.

Prof. M. Muzzzammil, Convener of the Centre for Disaster Management Studies highlighted the achievements of the Centre.

Prof. Abdul Baqi, convener of the workshop, introduced the theme whereas the organizing secretary Prof. Rehan A. Khan proposed the vote of thanks.

Prof. Sarfaraz A. Ansari, along with Prof. Muzzammil , Prof. Baqi and Prof. Rehan distributed the certificates to participants.
