Windows Phone 7.8 is around the corner. It is creating huge buzzing in tech market. Quite recently some sources revealed the features of the operating system. Of now, a Lumia 900 unit is spotted to be running on Windows Phone 7.8, which is an upgrade to Windows Phone 7.5 with the much-admired features of Windows Phone 8. A short video clip has shown up a Lumia 900 phone with the new operating system.
The video, which appeared on YouTube, doesn’t add anything new to our knowledge about Windows Phone 7.8. Of course, it shows resizable tiles, a major highlight of Windows Phone 8. Thanks to this feature, you can resize each tile (icon) to three sizes; small, medium and large. It is hoped that all distinguished features of WP 8 will have a place in the new update.
Earlier, a Lumia 510 handset has been spotted in a video with Windows Phone 7.8. It is doubted it was leaked by some Microsoft worker during the testing of the software. Anyway, the Lumia 510 also gave us some important hints about the potential features of the firmware. Adding to the spicy rumors, the clip revealed that it would come with two times more color themes and a lot of others.
“The Lumia 510 brochure is the most interesting piece, though it’s in Finnish. It does say the Lumia 510 will have a new Start screen with more available color themes, though. It also confirms the Windows Phone 7.8 won’t be the last firmware update you’ll get, probably to reassure the people who intend to buy the phone that it’s getting long-term support,” says GSM Arena.
Various rumors have earlier revealed some features of the firmware. It might come with all major attributes of Windows Phone 8. Thus, the list includes features like resizable Live Tiles, up to 20 new theme colors and a set of re-worked system applications such as MS Office, Xbox Games, Xbox Music, Windows Store and more.
Further, Windows Phone 7.8 is whispered to have a fresh boot screen that will match it with Windows Phone 8’s Live Lock Screen Wallpaper. Yes, the screen will be active with lots of interesting features so that users can even handle many functions from the lock screen itself. It is, however, not clear that whether the firmware will have support third-party apps though.
Why Windows Phone 7.8?
This particular version of Windows Phone is solely meant for the phones that we have in market with Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. You may know that the new Windows Phone 8 is not compatible with the hardware that is made for the software items before it. That means you can’t run WP 8 in Lumia 900, Lumia 800, Lumia 710 and many other devices. But, Microsoft wishes to allow users of those phones to experience the benefits and traits of Windows Phone 8.
As a result, the Redmond software firm begun to design this firmware, which will not only run on the former handsets, but also on the new and upcoming low-spec’ed Windows handsets. Yes, it is customized to operate handsets with lower specs and cheap prices. At the same time, Windows Phone 8 will adorn the top-of-the-line Windows phones like Lumia 920, Lumia 820, HTC Windows Phone 8X and more.
Microsoft has not yet exposed the exact release date of the firmware. In a recent announcement, the company has just noted that it would come early next year. Maybe, we can expect it sometime in January itself. It has started to work with various hardware makers to churn out as many as handsets for the platform.
