On any given day playing against Afghanistan shouldn’t be a matter of concern for top cricket sides. It may be on any other level, but when you are playing in the ICC T20 World Cup and you are not in great form, even minnows start looking like formidable.

This may be the case of Sri Lanka. They are not in the pink of health right now. Had a bad tour of Bangladesh and played better than only UAE and were beaten by all other teams including India, Bangladesh and a lowly Pakistan (during the tournament) in Asia Cup 2016.

In the warm up matches too, they couldn’t show much of firepower or strength. They played against Pakistan and looked like a local club against the fellow team from South Asia.

shahid afridi with javed miandadSri Lanka seems to be in a very bad position. They have won only 3 of the last 16 matches they have played recently. This is their worst performance patch in more than a decade. On the contrary Afghanistan seems to be a team that is on the move. They are improving on a daily basis and have become very close to threatening the best of the best in cricket.

Nonetheless, despite the free fall, Sri Lanka remains favorite to win the match. Afghanistan came through the first round of the World T20 unscathed, overpowering their closest competitors Zimbabwe with an ease that caught the attention of the rest of Group 1. More impressively, Afghanistan have adapted, ditching their gung-ho approach for a calculated assault in conditions that will only increase their potency. The bowling has been solid, and captain Asghar Stanikzai has used his available resources astutely.

On the other hand Sri Lankan bowling seems to have become ineffective. Sri Lanka’s win drought recently is directly proportional to the form of their best players. Post the retirement of Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara, the team has failed to get players of the same caliber. You can watch the match live here.
