There are rumors that the Russian Federation President Putin is all set to grace the all important game between Russia and United States of America. If this is indeed true, the high profile match will become all the more important due to his presence during the game.
There is no doubt that unlike US President Obama, Russian President is the supreme figure in the Russian politics and he is single handedly incharge of the nation. He is not answerable to anyone and there is no roadblock in front of him opposing and rejecting almost all his proposals that a Republican dominated House of Representatives does to President Barack Obama. In fact the Sochi Olympic 2014 that cost around a staggering $55 billion was possible only due to the fact that President Putin left no stone unturned to make it such a massive success that it is.
Notwithstanding every effort by Western media and many governments Sochi Olympic has been a magnificent success and brings Russia back to international glory as a great power. Meanwhile Thirty years ago the Russian ice hockey team was shocked by the stunning defeat at the hands of the US at the Lake Placid Games in 1980. And even today that clash is talked about the one that brought an end to the David and Goliath tale in the world of ice hockey.
The two teams are counted among the best ice hockey teams in the world. But Russia has not won a single ice hockey title so far in Olympics. The US team containing a group of amateur and college athletes had clinched victory from the jaws of defeat bringing joy to their country buffs in those days when the match was shown on US TV. Since that day (Miracle on Ice match) a lot of water has flown down the tunnel. Russia that since 1964 had not lost in world championship and Olympic tournament had a new challenger in the emerging Team US. And as both the teams get ready for the clash old memories of 1980 has surfaced with the Russians not taking any risk.
There is no doubt that both the teams will do their best to excel and finally win the match. They are taking this match seriously and don’t want the repeat of 1980 when they had lost with a wafer thin margin of 4-3. The Americans too are prepared for a tough fight for the Saturday match that is going to be watched by millions back home. The Russians side is a bit nervous. Vladislav Tretyak, president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation said: “I’m always nervous, but everybody will be nervous. We’re all nervous because everybody wants to win, especially against us. All the teams want to face us in the final.” Vladislav was the goalie in the 1980 game. Today Russian President Putin will be there to further propel his players to do better against archrivals Americans.
