UNSC to hold urgent meeting on Yemen
NEW YORK: At the request of Jordan, the United Nations Security Council will hold an urgent meeting on Yemen later on Sunday, at 3:00 (New York Time).
The urgent meeting is to be followed by closed consultations. It is to be held amid dramatic events on the Yemeni arena, with President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi calling on Ansar Allah group of the Houthi rebels to withdraw their militias from all ministries and government institutions.
Hadi, in a speech to the nation from his residence in Aden, on Saturday, urged the Houthis to return weapons they have stolen from military camps, comply with relevant UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and outcome of the national dialogue. The Houthis’ compliance, Hadi said, would create suitable atmospheres for dialogue and co-existence.
He said he has recently left Sanaa for Aden after the capital was occupied by the Houthi militias. He denied reports that his move was intended to pave way for separation of the south from the north.
