Tropical Storm Erika kills 20 in Dominica: All you need to know about relief, rehabilitation
Tropical Storm Erika has created havoc in Dominica. Till now more than two dozen people are said to have died and many more injured. There is no denying the fact that the tiny Caribbean island is looking like a ghost town following the Storm Erika.
The local government has launched rescue operation across the island. But for them rescue and relief work is going to be a very tough job indeed.
The tiny island doesn’t have much resources of its own and will need massive external resources to provide succor to the people who have been hit hard by the tropical storm Erika. Reconstruction of the island will be something that is going to take a long time and lots of resources. But right now what is on everyone’s mind is rescue and relief.
Prime Minister of the island nation Roosevelt Skerrit while trying to give hope to people said, “Rest assured, my brothers and sisters, you are not alone in your period of mourning in your period of pain, in your period of suffering and anxiety…We are in this together and help is coming your way.â€
Whole villages have reportedly been destroyed and roads and entire areas submerged under water, many homes don’t seem to have ever existed in many places that were fully inhabited.
In the meantime the Prime Minister of the tiny nation with just seventy thousand citizens is facing mounting criticism for not letting people know the intensity of the tropical storm Erika.
“There is no need to indulge in blaming others for what has happened in Dominicaâ€, said he.
Latest reports suggest that as the storm has left the island, the authorities are focusing on search-and-rescue efforts, with other countries in the region providing helicopters and other assistance. The Prime minister said that the storm has moved the tiny island backward by some two decades.
