Many people have been saying that the world is coming to an end, but Super Moon 2012 May 5 will not cause Armageddon
Is the world going to end this Saturday when the super moon descends on us, looking frighteningly big? There are many people who are making such dreadful predictions. But this is neither the first nor the last of such predictions. On every such occasion, there emerge people who come with similar prophecies, but the world continues to race ahead, leaving them more and more frustrated.
The super moon would appear at least 16 to 18 percent bigger than the full moon on other days and there are predictions from some astronomers who say that the big moon may bring in floods or even earthquake in many parts of the world.
The super moon or perigee-syzygy isn’t a common phenomenon and happens in years if not decades. The full moon happens when moon come closest to earth or perigee. Experts say that though the moon orbits the earth, the orbiting is not perfectly in a perfect circle. As a result, during part of its orbit it is a little closer to us than at other times. In the process of orbiting, when the moon reaches closest part, it is called perigee, while the biggest distance is named as apogee.
Sun has great influence on earth. It affects weather all over earth. But moon too influences the earth and causes tides in many parts of the world. Its ability to affect the movements in seas has many astronomers believe that its coming closer to the earth may prove catastrophic. But that is certainly not true.
Meanwhile common people too are worried by the super moon. A reader says, “People with shallow minds not able to think for themselves will believe any garbage thrown at them. The world has gone through the worst of the times in the past without any drastic change. The life goes on for few million years more. The earth was there long before life and humans on earth and will remain long after unless an asteroid hits us. But it has not happened in millions of years and does not seem like will happen any time soon”.
