Sperm whale in deep sea meets underwater robot: Update

Researchers had not thought about this meeting. Not even in their wildest dreams. And to be true this meeting took place thousands of feet below the surface of the sea.

Scientists claim that this meeting actually took place between them and a sperm whale. It is needless to say that these scientists were actually not swimming in the same carefree mood as the whale. They were in the safe cocoon of their ROV thousands feet beneath the sea level.

Initially the researchers couldn’t recognize the whale and thought it to be a humpback whale. Later someone pointed out that it looked more like a sperm whale. The meeting was recorded and has been uploaded on YouTube since. The importance of the video can be gauged from the fact that till now mor than a million people have watched it.

blue whaleResearchers are of the view that the sperm whale is one of the whale species that most widely hunted for its oil that can be used as raw materials of wax. This whale had been falling on the verge of extinction. During their visit they met a strange visitor. At first one of the team members thought it was humpback whale but later on they identified it as a sperm whale. It was very much curious and wandered around the ROV many times. At times it came very close to the vehicle.

While talking about the chance encounter the team says, Encounters between sperm whales and ROVs are incredibly rare.” Sperm whale is the loudest species on Earth. They are also called cachalot and can make calls up to 230 decibels. They are quite an intelligent creature with a massive brain of twenty pounds. Sperm whale is considered as one of the largest toothed predators in the world. Its life span ranges up to 60 years and its lenght is around 60 feet. A lot of them were hunted for their wax-like spermaceti that is used as a lubricant and in fuel lamps and candles. Now it falls in the endanegred species zone.
