Many nations that were expected to lead are looking like losers, and laggards are cruising fast. Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic medal count & latest updates

The Sochi Games will be remembered for many things. Since the start of the Winter Olympics, many athletes have accomplished feats and many had made into headlines. Of them one skater who has made an impressive start is none other than Japanese Yuzuru Hanyu. The 19-year-old, who comes from Sendai, a city devastated by natural calamity, has become Japan’s first male gold-medal skater.

And when asked what the gold medal meant for the people of Sendai, he was hesitant to answer. However, when pressed, he said: “Maybe I am a gold medalist at these Olympics, but this medal can’t really help out the recovery in that region. I still feel helpless here. I still feel like I can’t really help. But because I am a gold medalist, maybe I will be able to do something for the recovery. Perhaps there is something I could do going forward.”

Speaking through an interpreter, Hanyu managed to score 280.09. This was something that was even beyond the reach of world champion Patrick Chan, who settled for the silver medal. Once again Chan failed to get gold for his country in skating in Olympic.

After losing the gold to the Japanese, he said: “I find it funny that Canadian skaters have been labeled as cursed just because we can’t achieve gold at this one event. We always remember Kurt Browning, we always remember Elvis Stojko, we always remember Brian Orser. We always remember Toller Cranston. We remember these greats who made history and I’m going to say the same thing. You can’t change the fact we have multiple successful Canadian men who changed the sport of figure skating.”
