Samsung Galaxy S3 release date has been tentatively set for May 2012. But there is still some confusion over exact date of the launch

The Samsung Galaxy S3 will receive a little update over the S2 in matters of increased speed and a new eye-tracking feature in it, new reports suggests. The next generation smartphone would also not be called an S3.

An unnamed source in the UK telecoms industry hinted that the next Galaxy phone would be “like the iPhone 4S was to the 4.”

The same source refused to make things clearer, but preferred to play with words, saying, “Don’t expect it to be called the S3. Samsung might do an Apple.”

So the gist is that instead of opting of a rehaul of the old version, it will be slightly tinkered with for better performance and only very few additions will be made in the supposed ‘S3’. The mysterious unnamed source also hinted that to guess at the specs, one would so well to “look to the HTC One X for what to expect.”

To refresh the One X specs in memory, the HTC smartphone has a 1.5GHz quad-core chip with 1GB of RAM and a 4.7-inch screen.

Samsung has already sent out invites to media for a 3 May launch function of the next gen Galaxy smartphone.

According to popular speculation and rumours, the specs of the next Galaxy phone would be thus.

The physical home button of S2 would feature on the new phone and it will look very much like its older siblings Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note.

There would be a 1.8GHz chip and 2GB of RAM to pack in the muscles in smartphone terms.

There is also a rumour somewhere of the new phone codenamed ‘Bali’. It will take care of the no-namer S3, but it feels weird to have a completely new name when the phone is basically an upgraded S2. If Samsung is going to do an Apple, then Apple did name the upgraded iPhone 4 the iPhone 4S and not something entirely out of the blue.

There is one novelty however, that can do a ‘Siri’ for this phone. The eye-tracking thing that Samsung calls ‘Human Interaction’. The phone’s front-facing camera would detect when the owner looks at the screen (and is using the phone) and it would lock the phone the moment the owner looks away.

This sounds pretty exciting, but going by the face-recognition feature that caused such blunders, one might do good to contain the excitement a bit. Besides, if someone sets s password for unlocking the phone, it can become quite a hassle to unlock it everytime tour gaze wanders someplace while typing a message or while playing a game!
