Saina Nehwal is world number 1
While Indian team was packed up and sent back to home from Australia after being beaten by a resurgent Australia in the ICC World Cup 2015, there is nothing to feel despair. Being beaten in the World Cup for defending champions is nothing new and the media is uselessly crying hoarse as never any defending champion has been able to retain the title.
Thankfully there comes a hope from a very different game. Saina Nehwal, has done the whole nation proud. She has become the No. 1 badminton player in the entire world.
This is a feat that has been managed by none other than her now and the whole nation seems to be celebrating this great feat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi while talking about the accomplishment sent a congratulator note for her. “The phenomenal accomplishments of Saina Nehwal make us very proud. I congratulate her on being the World Number 1†the Prime Minister said in the statement.
After being crowned the No. 1, Saina said, “I want to be the best. It’s not about the ranking, it’s about being consistent. Li Xuerui is injured. You can’t ignore the fact that she’s the best player in the world…Everybody dreams of winning the Olympics or the World Championships. I’m one of them. But I want to be relaxed, enjoy my game. Becoming No.1 is a good thing. If it’s in my destiny, it will happenâ€
But if the girl doesn’t do well in her next game the ranking may slip away from her hand. Reports suggest that rankings will officially be updated next Thursday. Prakash Padukone was the first Indian to top the rankings, in men’s singles. The latest achievement is a big boost for Saina as she eyes a gold medal at next year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
