Prof A R Kidwai delivers lecture in UK University
Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University’ Department of English Professor, Dr A R Kidwai, who is currently the Director, UGC ASC in the university recently delivered the English Research Seminar lecture at the Department of Culture and English Studies at the University of Sunderland, United Kingdom.
The lecture was on his paper, entitled “The Challenging Gaze: Islam/Muslims in Today’s Globalized World in Qaisra Shahraz’s novel Revolt.”
Delving deep into the corpus of the British novelist, Professor Kidwai pointed out how Shahraz’s novels stand out as a laudable attempt at re-contextualizing the present Muslim society and modernity.
Prof Kidwai said that Shahraz’s focus on gender justice, peaceful coexistence, and the eternal Islamic value system distinguish her from the routine pulp fiction writers who seek to discredit the Muslim society and Islamic articles of faith.
He also said that Shahraz’s novels are free from the negative portrayal of Islam/Muslims, which is habitually inscribed in the literary texts representing Western literary orientalism.
He further said that the author’s discussions on immigration, identity of the marginalized sections of the society, arranged marriages, and above all, women’s role in Muslim society promote the ideals of mutual understanding, tolerance, and respect for various cultures and religions.
While introducing, Prof Kidwai to people attending the seminar, Dr Geoffrey Nash, Department of Culture, University of Sunderland said that Prof Kidwai comes from the historic Aligarh Muslim University, which has transformed Muslim education in India.
Professor Kidwai will also visit the Department of English, University of Leicester as part of his present trip to the UK in his capacity as Honorary Visiting Fellow, School of English, University of Leicester.
