Polar bear attacks total solar eclipse tourist in Arctic, thankfully saved
Moravec, a Czech tourist never thought that his sojourn will end in severe injuries. He had set out to watch Friday March 20 total solar eclipse. He was not alone. There were five other Czech nationals in his team and all of them were excited as they set up two tents some twenty miles 20 miles northeast of Longyearbyen, very close to Svalbard.
To be true the six Czech tourists have gone on a tour that included watching the total solar eclipse 2015 in their itinery. No one thought that the snowmobile tour will end up in this tragic fashion.
The tourists were actually headed to Pyramiden, an old Russian mining village. They were expecting to watch the total solar eclipse of march 20 2015 in its full darkness. Only Svalbard and the Faroe Islands, a Danish autonomous territory in the North Atlantic, are going to have total solar eclipse today.
The tourists were staying in two tents. Moravec said that the polar bear attacked him in the head. It was finally people in the second tent that came to his rescue, after hearing him and his friends screaming. They shot the bear, sending it fleeing. “My mother took the gun and shot three times,” Zuzanna Hakova, a friend of Moravec’s at his hospital bedside, explained to NRK.
Officials claim that they have been trying to create awareness about threats posed by polar bears. People leaving Svalbard’s inhabited areas are required to be accompanied by an armed local guide or carry a rifle. Officials also say that there have been five fatal polar bear attacks in Svalbard since 1971.
