Obama speech on terrorism yesterday was impressive
President Obama in his presidential speech from Oval office condemned the attack in California and said that the act was an act of terrorism. This is the most direct admission by the US President that the shooting in California that killed as many as 14 people was not a simple criminal act, but a terrorist act indeed.
Earlier the US government had talked of the killing as a criminal act that actually resembled many similar killings in the US in the past. Such random killings in the US are not uncommon.
While talking about the killings at San Bernardino, President Obama said, “The FBI is still gathering the facts about what happened in San Bernardino, but here is what we know. The victims were brutally murdered and injured by one of their coworkers and his wife. So far, we have no evidence that the killers were directed by a terrorist organization overseas, or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at home. But it is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalization, embracing a perverted interpretation of Islam that calls for war against America and the West. They had stockpiled assault weapons, ammunition, and pipe bombs. So this was an act of terrorism, designed to kill innocent peopleâ€.
There have been reports that the couple that killed the people in California had been acting under the orders of Islamic State. There is no denying the fact that the threat of Islamic State is going up with spate of attacks in different parts of the world. Attack on Paris has been followed by attacks in other parts of the world including the UK and the USA. Gauging the enormity of the problem, the world seems to be coming together to tackle the threat from the Islamic State and Al Qaeda.
President said that the US will destroy ISIL and other such organizations. “The threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it. We will destroy ISIL and any other organization that tries to harm us. Our success won’t depend on tough talk, or abandoning our values, or giving into fear. That’s what groups like ISIL are hoping for. Instead, we will prevail by being strong and smart, resilient and relentless, and by drawing upon every aspect of American powerâ€.
He said that the US military will hunt down the terrorists and added, “our military will continue to hunt down terrorist plotters in any country where it is necessary. In Iraq and Syria, airstrikes are taking out ISIL leaders, heavy weapons, oil tankers, infrastructure. And since the attacks in Paris, our closest allies — including France, Germany, and the United Kingdom — have ramped up their contributions to our military campaign, which will help us accelerate our effort to destroy ISILâ€.
