NYPD Officer Randolph Holder dead update: was shot dead while chasing suspect
A senior New York Police Department officer was killed after being shot in the head. He was pursuing a suspect. There was a report of shot being fired and he received a shot from close range while pursuing the offender.
The high-pitched gunfight and chase very close to the East River took the life of the respected NYPD officer on the spot. Doctors pronounced him brought dead when taken to the hospital.
The city seems to be shocked over the bizarre killing and the way it happened. Nonetheless he is not the only police officer who lost his life in New York in recent months. As many as four police officers have lost their lives in this manner in less than a year. Police Commissioner William Bratton said that officer Randolph Holder, 33, was the fourth such NYPD officer to suffer this fate in this period.
The police commissioner while making the announcement said, “That’s about as bad as it getsâ€. He was talking to the media at Harlem Hospital early Wednesday morning. He went on to add, “Tonight, he did what every other officer in the NYPD does when the call comes — he ran toward danger…It was the last time he will respond to that call.â€
His fellow police officers in NYPD are shocked following the incident. The fatal shooting happened as Holder and his partner responded to shots fired at around 8:30 p.m. near a public housing development in East Harlem, in north Manhattan. Reports suggest that when the officers came on the scene, a man and other witnesses said that his bike had been stolen at gunpoint and the suspect fled in with a group of people along a footpath heading north on the FDR Drive, adjacent to the East River.
In the meantime everyone seems to have been shocked by the death. Mayor Bill de Blasio says, “We are humbled by Officer Randolph Holder’s example, an example of service and courage and sacrifice…Our hearts are heavy. We offer our thoughts and our prayers to his family.â€
