Northern California wildfire spreading fast: How to take care of the issue on permanent basis?

The whole area was already facing a severe drought for a long time, and the massive fires that have engulfed a huge part of the state seem to have further added to frustration and problems.

Thousands of homes stretched across hundreds of miles are being threatened by more than 20 massive wildfires that have spread further, gaining speed and intensity in the last few days. While more than nine thousand firefighters are trying to contain these fires that seem to reach the sky, there seem to be no effect of them and their efforts on these fires.

To be true, this is not the first time that so many wildfires have started in this part of the world. They have become an annual spectacle and seem to be spreading in intensity with every passing year. But this is the first time that the U.S. Forest Service in its 110 long years of existence has said that it spends more than 50% of its annual budget on firefighting at the expense of other programs to prevent the infernos. When fires are spreading fast, other things seem to be left on the margins.arizona fire

Latest reports suggest that the wildfires in USA have charred more than 6 million acres this year, mostly in the western U.S. and Alaska. In Northern California that 20 odd massive wildfires seem to be creating havoc across regions.

There are reports that due to the increasing ferocity of these fires and their increasing scope, the Forest Service has been forced to tap other funds, such as forest-thinning projects, in order to keep up with the massive blazes. The Forest Service in a report said, “The agency is at a tipping point…To solve this problem, we must change the way we pay for wildfire…Instead of treating catastrophic wildfires as a normal agency expense, we must treat them more like other natural disasters, such as tornadoes or hurricanes.”

What is the cause of more wildfires and their increased intensity? Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told media that “Climate change and other factors largely beyond our control are causing the cost of fighting fires to rise every year…but the way we fund our Forest Service, which we can control, hasn’t changed in generations.”
