North Zone Tennis Intervarsity inaugurated
ALIGARH: Pro-Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University, Brig. S. Ahmad Ali today inaugurated the North Zone Inter University Tennis Tournament at the AMU tennis grounds, which would conclude on November 10, 2015.
Addressing on the occasion, Brig. Ali said that Tennis was one of the fastest growing sports in India and AMU had already made a remarkable development in this game. He said that in view of the increased interest of our youth in this sport, efforts should be made to provide high class facilities in all educational institutions.
Brig. Ali said that AMU offers grass bedded courts for tennis, which are considered better in quality than the synthetic ones. He said that its standard had lowered after the game was started being played on synthetic turfs. He said there was a need to promote this game at national level to revive Indiaâ€™s golden tennis days.
Brig. Ali said that the AMU administration was making extensive efforts in promoting games and sports in the University. He urged the students to spare time for sports activities instead of keeping involved with mobile and laptop.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor welcomed the participating teams coming from other Universities. He urged the University students to socialize themselves with the visiting team members and introduce them with the great academic and cultural ethos of the AMU.
Prof. Amjad Masood, President, Tennis Club said that the Club came into being in 1902 and produced international level players like Ghaus Mohammad. He said that the club has lived up to its goals successfully and several national level players have received their training on University court.
Secretary of the University Games Committee, Prof. M. Shoaib Zaheer said that the present University administration has been sincerely making efforts to promote games and sports and revive the Universityâ€™s past, which has witnessed the rise of international players in different games. He said that construction of a new Tennis Hall, Swimming Pool and Riding field is underway and sports facilities have been increased at the residential Hall level.
AMU Registrar Dr. Asfar Ali Khan, Technical Director and international tennis player Mr. Junaid Akhtar and other University officials were present on the occasion.
Punjab University, Chandigarh beat PAU, Ludhiana by 3-0, Chandigarh University, Mohali beat MJP, Rohilkhand University, Bareilly and Amity University, Noida defeated Gurukul Kangdi University, Haridwar by 3-0 in the North Zone Inter University Tennis Tournament being played here on Wednesday at Aligarh Muslim University.
In the first match, under the singles category, Shrey Gupta of Chandigarh beat Vivek Kumar of Ludhiana by 6-0, 6-0, Yuvraj Singh beat Vishwas Garg by 6-0, 6-0 whereas in the doubles category Dheeranush Bhatti and Shrey Gupta beat Sanmeet Kumar and Rahul Sen of Ludhiana by 6-0, 6-0.
In the second match, under the singles category Deepinder Singh of Mohali beat Rahul Kumar of Bareilly by 6-0, 6-1, Hardeep Singh beat Rahul Singh by 6-0, 6-1, while in the doubles Jagbir Singh and Hardeep Singh of Mohali beat Rahul Kumar and Sumit Singh of Bareilly by 6-0, 6-1.
In the third match, in the singles category Gaurav Gujjar of Noida beat Ashish Rawat by 6-1, 6-2, Ajay Pratap beat Himanshu Tyagi by 6-0, 6-1 and in doubles Ajay Pratap and Gaurav Gujjar beat Shubham Kumar and Ashish Rawat of Haridwar by 6-1, 6-1.
