National Seminar on ‘Meaning of Meaningless’
Aligarh: The Department of Linguistics, Aligarh Muslim University, in collaboration with Systematic Functional Linguistics Association, is organizing a National Seminar on ‘Meaning of Meaninglessness: Translating Fiction; Text, Co-Text and Context’ under DRS-SAP II during March 18-19, 2016 at 10 am. The Seminar is dedicated to Professor Ruqaiya Hasan.
Professor Shabana Hameed, Chairperson, Department of Linguistics informed that the central theme of the seminar focuses on the claim that meaninglessness is based on the traditional concept of meaning and the irony that the search for meaning, has led and must lead to a sense of meaninglessness. She said that the recognition that any comprehensible aspect of a thing depends on human interpretation from a particular standpoint, and that all intelligible meaning is therefore projection, is a clear denial of the objectivist view of meaning, which leads to a sense of meaninglessness. Professor Shabana told that the Seminar is proposed to look at the theme from two different frameworks i.e. language as social semiotic and literature as social discourse.
Professor Ali R Fatihi, Coordinator, DRS-SAP II informed that the Seminar will be inaugurated by AMU Vice Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah whereas it will be presided over by Professor Masood-Ul-Hasan. He said that Professor Shamim Hanafi, Professor Emeritus, JMI, Professor ON Koul, Former Director, CIIL, Professor AR Kidwai, Director, UGC HRD Centre and Professor Anjani K Sinha, Delhi University will address on the occasion.
The Organizing Committee of the Seminar includes Professor Imtiaz Hasnain, Professor Khateeb S Mustafa, Mr Masood Ali Beg, Ms Samina Surti, Mr Abdul Azeez Khan, Ms Nazreen Laskar and Ms Sadia Husna Hasan.
