MTNL to launch free roaming service: What does it mean
Government owned telecom operator in New Delhi and Mumbai may do away with roaming charges across the country. This is going to be a huge Diwali gift for millions of MTNL users across the two cities. The telecom operator is seeing a large number of consumers deserting it and going with other telecom operators.
But a couple of years ago, MTNL was among the biggest telecom operators in the country. But things may change pretty soon.
Mahanagar Telecom Nagar Limited or MTNL chairman and managing director NK Yadav said the scheme will be announced soon and they are finalizing the dates. With this scheme, users will not have to pay roaming charges for incoming calls when travelling outside their respective circles. At present, MTNL customers have to pay roaming charges for incoming calls when they go outside of Delhi and Mumbai.
While talking to a leading news agency MTNL chairman and managing director said the scheme will be announced soon and they are finalizing the dates. The government under National Telecom Policy 2012 has set a goal to achieve free roaming gradually. Telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad during a meeting of consultative committee attached to the ministry of communication and IT informed Members of Parliament (MPs) that MTNL is planning to launch free roaming soon. Moreover, MTNL has also increased minimum broadband speed to 2Mbps and is offering free broadband for one month to its landline customers.
