Canelo Alvarez is the new king of the boxing world. After winning the fight against one of the best boxers in the form of Miguel Cotto, Alvarez said it was the beginning of his era.

Though he didn’t claim as to whose era had ended with the beginning of his reign no one actually wanted to pose any difficult question before the new middleweight champion. It was a time to celebrate the impressive win of the Mexican fighter who had remained underdog for a long time despite achieving great success at such a young age.

He was impressive from the word go. The expected improvement in Miguel Cotto was never visible throughout the fight, though he continued facing him and giving the new champ tough times throughout the match. The loss is going to be a definite failure for Freddie Roach too who had led the attack against the 25-year old Alvarez calling him a ‘robot’ who doesn’t move while fighting.

There is no denying the fact that the Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center will be remembered for years to come. For, here two great boxers tried to give everything to the game and came out with an exceptional fight. It must be kept in mind that Cotto, 35, gave it a tremendous effort, staying on his toes and moving nicely throughout the fight, but the judges clearly liked Alvarez’s brute strength more, awarding him the fight on surprisingly wide scores of 119-109, 118-110 and 117-111.

Immediately after the fight an emotional Alvarez who was being written off earlier said, “It’s an emotion I can’t put into words…I’m very happy, and much respect to Miguel Cotto. I will always respect him and he’s a great champion, but now it’s my era…I was fully prepared for what Cotto was going to do in the ring, whether that was take a defense stance or be the aggressor”. The fight was folly sold out and more than eleven thousand boxing fans wildly cheered for the champion.

There is no denying the fact that Alvarez was mighty impressed with his fight. “We knew going into this fight that it would be a difficult journey, but I feel that I was the faster and stronger fighter tonight…I wasn’t hurt by his punches…It didn’t matter if I landed 10 punches as long as they were 10 well-connected punches and not get hit by his punches,” Alvarez said.
