Cotto vs Canelo Alvarez 2015 fight highlights: Will he fight Gennady Golovkin or Floyd Mayweather in 2016

Who Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is going to fight next? Though his fight against Miguel Cotto happened merely two days ago, the whole boxing world seems to be excited about his next fight. The new champion is making all the right noises and after winning the fight and taking over the middleweight belt Canelo said that his era has begun.

The fact is that he is just twenty-five years old and has proved himself beyond doubt. After winning the fight against Freddie Roach trained Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas in front of a sold out crowd of more than 11,000 people he has proved that his techniques are good and the perceived ‘chinks in his armor’ have been repaired to such an extent that despite a great performance, Cotto couldn’t beat him.

The fact that he is just 25-years old makes him a long-term contender at the top. He can also pick and chose his opponents, though still not in the same fashion as Floyd Mayweather did, but still in many ways.

Miguel CottoWhile talking about his long-term prospects, Oscar De La Hoya, Alvarez’s promoter said“The bottom line is we have ‘the guy.’ We have ‘the guy’ for many years, and it’s going to be a lot of fun putting together some big fights”. By imposing his size and strength on Cotto (40-5), Alvarez (46-1-1) connected on 118 power punches to Cotto’s 75 and won the unanimous decision by scores of 117-111 (John McKaie), 119-109 (Dave Moretti) and 118-110 (Burt Clements).

Alvarez seems to have matured significantly since his loss against Mayweather some two years ago. “I wanted to leave no doubt — a clear victory…I feel like a more complete fighter, a more solid fighter and those other fighters prepared me for this moment. I’m ready”, said the champion after the fight.

Now everyone seems to be asking one single question. Whether he’s immediately ready for the unbeaten Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 knockouts), who possesses the World Boxing Assn. and International Boxing Federation middleweight belts and has knocked out 20 consecutive opponents, is undetermined. This will be one fight that the whole world will be waiting anxiously.
