Both are tablets from the software giant, but both are very different. Microsoft Surface Pro vs Surface RT features comparison makes interesting reading

Microsoft’s Surface Pro and Surface RT may look the same. They have identical form factors and screen-size. But, they are entirely different machines. Put it simply, the Pro is more like an Ultrabook with powerful specs, while the RT is just a tablet PC with an ARM processor and a stripped-down Windows version. In other words, the Pro supports lots of full version software items and apps in the same way they run on PCs. In the meantime, the RT is just a tablet that doesn’t run many apps.

The Redmond software giant has finally publicized the long-awaited release date of Surface Pro. The device will come to stores on Feb. 9 and it will be priced at around $900. The tech market has long been waiting for the device. Meanwhile, its Windows RT sibling has been in stores since October 2012. So, we think that is a good time to compare specs and features of Surface Pro and Surface RT.

Software: This is an important area that puts the devices at two ends. The Surface Pro is specially designed to run the full version of Windows 8. It is the same software that Microsoft developed for desktops, PCs and servers. It supports full-fledged versions of all Microsoft programs and apps. It is when the Surface RT has the narrowed Windows RT. It is meant for devices that run on ARM chips. It doesn’t run all apps in full options.

Processor: When it comes to processor, the tablets are entirely different products. The Pro is running on a 3rd generation Intel Core i5 CPU with Intel HD Graphics 4000 and 4GB of RAM. In this regard, it is like any high-end PC or laptop. But, the RT is up with a quad core NVIDIA Tegra 3 CPU and 2GB of RAM. That is, it is more a tablet PC.

Storage: Like an Ultrabook or notebook, the Surface Pro has solid state drives (SSDs) for internal memory. Thus, its memory goes in 64GB and 128GB options, while the RT is available in 32GB and 64GB capacities like most of top-of-the-line tablets, for example Apple iPad. So, if you have more data to store internally, it is better to buy the Pro.

Size and Weight: The Surface tabs are mainly different in body thickness and weight. Indeed, they keep almost the same height and width. But, the Pro is thicker and heavier respectively at 0.53inches and 2lbs due to its advanced specs. The RT, on the other hand, is thinner at 0.37-inch and lighter at 1.5lbs.

Camera & Ports: Both the gadgets have equal 720p HD LifeCams on front and rear panels. The cameras make use of TruColor technology. They also share features like microphone, stereo speakers, USB port (version 3 on Pro and version 2 on RT), microSDXC card slot, headset jack and more.

Touch Cover: Basically, both the machines are slates. However, users can turn them to Ultrabook or notebook-like devices using Microsoft’s Touch Cover that comes with both the devices. Touch Cover acts like a keyboard, kickstand as well as a security cover. Touch Cover needs to be bought for extra charges. Touch Cover with sensor-based key comes for $120 and with physical keys comes for $130.

Price: It is a matter of big difference between the devices. The Surface RT is just priced at $499 (the 32GB base model). On contrast, the Pro, which is highly advanced with better memory, high performance CPU and more, comes for $900. Users need to spend over $100 additionally for Touch Covers as well.

Conclusion
Windows RT-based Surface tablet has been in market since October. As per analysts, the device has been receiving lukewarm response. Microsoft has, however, rebuffed the news and it says that the device will now move to more global markets. Anyway, Surface Pro is on way. Let us keep our fingered crossed for the next amazing tablet from Microsoft.
