Maria Sharapova pictures go viral following drug test press conference
It is the greatest fall from the grace in recent years. One of the best and most glamorous tennis players in the world, Maria Sharapova who had intended to make an important announcement, stunned the whole world when she said that she had failed a doping test at the Australian Open.
The 29-year old Russian who is the winner of five grand slams said she tested positive for Meldonium, a drug known to improve oxygen uptake and endurance.
Sharapova tends to hog limelight even when she isn’t among victories. Her achievements are myriad. She has been ranked world No. 1 in singles by the WTA on five separate occasions, for a total of 21 weeks. She is one of ten women, and the only Russian, to hold the career Grand Slam. She is also an Olympic medalist, having earned silver for Russia in women’s singles at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
The Russian who is said to have arrived in the US penniless has a net worth of around $200 million. After making the announcement of doping the richest sports woman in the world said she wants to stay in tennis — the sport that has made her rich beyond her wildest dreams even as her talent has arguably gone unfulfilled.
It is amazing that despite winning as many as 21 grand slam titles, Serena Williams is not even worth half of Maria Sharapova. when she shot to international fame as a giggly 17-year-old Wimbledon winner in 2004 — the third youngest to conquer the All England Club — no one would have thought her maiden Grand Slam title would remain her only title on the lawns of southwest London. She would go on to win once in Australia and once at the US Open while claiming two titles at the French Open, despite famously likening her movement on Roland Garros’s crushed red brick as a “cow on ice.â€
Sharapova endorses top of the line brands. She is a brand ambassador for Porsche, Cole Haan and in 2010 signed a contract extension with Nike worth a reported $70 million. In the immediate aftermath of her doping revelations, Nike cut ties with the Russian. Porsche and Swiss watchmaker TAGHeuer followed suit.
Despite the doping incident she says she loves the sport and would like to continue playing. “I don’t want to end my career this way…And I really hope I will be given another chance to play this game†she added.
