There are very few movies which generate interest among the masses even before their release. Marred by controversies, Madras Café, a story allegedly revolving around LTTE and assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is facing an uncertain future, as it stands released in some places, while banned in several others.

According to the those associated with the film, ‘Madras Cafe’ is the story of an Indian Intelligence agent, who journeys into a war torn coastal island to break a resolute rebel group, only to discover a deeper conspiracy by a faceless enemy united to seize a common nemesis – India.

The film directed by Shoojit Sircar, of Vicky Donor fame, has John Abraham and  Nargis Fakhri in the lead roles and  Rashi Khanna, Sheetal Malhar, Leena Maria and Siddhartha Basu in supporting cast.

Set against the the Sri Lankan civil war and depicting the 1991 assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandh, ‘Madras Cafe’ generated wrath after the Tamil activists alleged that the film portrays the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres as terrorists.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s Tamil Nadu unit chief Pon Radhakrishnan  and Vaiko’s MDMK  have sought a ban on ‘Madras Cafe’, alleging that it portrays LTTE in a bad light even as the DMK chief Karunanidhi urged the government to probe charges against ‘Madras Café.

In fact on August 21,  the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on August 21 had observed that the Tamil version of Madras Cafe should not be released in Tamil Nadu until Central Board of Film Certification clears ‘

In a statement issued on his behalf, actor and producer of the film John Abraham said: “I would like to urge all of Chennai to support ‘Madras Cafe’ as a film and release it as it is a credible film made with a lot of heart and it gives audiences something novel to be entertained about.”
