Lyrid meteor showers 2013 are set to peak this week. Best time, when and where to watch are questions that are being asked by almost anybody and everybody

Lyrid meteor showers are set to appear in the night sky in the days to come. The lyrids are expected to give a scintillating view in the night in the next eight days. Beginning from tonight the Lyrids are expected to last and continue falling across the US and beyond till 26th April, making it one of the longest meteor showers in the whole year. These meteors come with another distinction. Unlike most other meteor showers these are real meteor showers as they fall in dozens and not in ones or twos like most of the meteors showers throughout the world.

Many people are fearing that very bright moon may destroy the prospect of a good view of these meteors. But the good thing is that while it may be the case in the initial days, in the latter part of the meteor showers will come when the moon has lost much of its brightness. When the moon is very bright, it obscures the view of the falling meteors from the sky and when the night is dark, these falling stars illuminate the sky, giving great view to sky gazers.

As far as lyrids are concerned, they occur when the Earth runs into the stream of cosmic ruins of C/1861 G1 Thatcher, which is a periodic comet. Of course, debris from the comet is what we see as Lyrids in the April nights. Most meteor showers happen when the Earth moves through some comets, whose ruins would shine in sunlight. Lyrid showers have been observed for nearly 3000 years. When it comes to the 2013 Lyrids shower, timing is much crucial, because a quarter moon will illuminate in the night sky from April 18 to April 25. So, the Lyrids meteors, which will only be seen properly in dark night, won’t come to sight easily and you can’t enjoy the splendor if you fail to keep timing. So, set your alarm clock for the right time and get up early to observe the shower. As per space scientists, April 22 is ideal for watching Lyrids showers this year.

As far as the best time to watch these meteors is concerned, the moon will begin to fall just before 4 a.m. EDT on April 21 on the U.S. east coast. That is, the best time to watch the meteor shower extends from around 3:30 am to just before the dawn break. So it is necessary that you should wake up early morning on the day the shower is expected to peak to watch the fall at its best.

Another important question that many people want to ask is where to watch these meteors. The Lyrid meteor shower is visible from all over the world. On its peak night, you could expect a rate of 10 to 100 meteors per hour. It could vary based on different factors. However, as a watcher, you are expected to find a better place to have a view of the floating showers. It is also important that you should find a place that is far away from city lights and other impediments. Well, Lyrids meteors will be clearly seen in the north-northwest night skies during the early hours of morning. You can predict whether a meteor belongs to a certain shower by following its trail to see if it derives near a specific part in the sky, which is known as the radiant. The Lyrids are to emerge from a point in the famous constellation Lyra. So, if you have a clear idea about these things, you will be able to enjoy the upcoming meteor showers more clearly.

One crucial aspect is how to watch them. No special equipment is actually needed for watching the meteor showers. You can just open you naked eyes at the skies for watching the dazzling meteors. So what you need to do is to find a comfortable reclining chair, sit back and enjoy the spatial fireworks. “Simply find a dark, open sky away from artificial lights. Lie down comfortably on a reclining lawn chair, and look upward. Although the moonlight is sure to wash out a good number of Lyrid meteors in 2013, some Lyrids may be bright enough to overcome the moonlit glare,” says EarthSky. In short, the best time for watching a stunning shower of meteors just comes up. Get ready for those days, when you can watch one of the best meteor showers of the year. So get ready and head to a secluded place and enjoy a great view of the falling meteors.
