Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam release date delayed in TN, Muslims protest

He is facing flack from all around. In the meantime Kamal Haasan’s film Vishwaroopam’s release date has been delayed in TN where Muslims have been protesting over the movie

(NVONews.Com) Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam is in the eye of the storm following multi-pronged controversies that it has generated. The movie that was being expected to be released has been delayed by more than a fortnight and there are still no certain reports as to when it will be released in theaters in Tamil Nadu.

Not just Tamil Muslim community –very well off and influential in this southern Indian state –other groups too are annoyed with the film and the way it has been treated by Kamal Hassan so far. Muslims are saying that the film is anti-Muslim as it is divisive and will create rift in the already highly fragmented society in India.

It is perplexing to see a very talented and respected actor embroiled in such controversy. But given the forceful agitation of the Muslim community in this southern Indian state, and given the strong voice they have in the state, the government is not going to ignore their agitation. Meanwhile the state government has succumbed to the pressure and has suspended the screening of Kamal Hassan movie.

A local Muslim leader in the state M H Jawahirullah who is a member of the state assembly and President of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam is leading the charge against the movie. While talking to a news agency he says, “The screening of the movie will affect social harmony in the state. We plan to meet the Home Secretary, besides moving the Censor Board”.

But the opposition from the Muslim community is not the lone issue for the actor and the film. He had already faced flack after taking a U-turn on his decision to release the movie on Direct-to-Home (DTH) platform. Theatre owners who were disappointed with his decision protested before he finally backtracked.
