JNMC Surgeons perform complicated Brainstem Glioma surgery on six-year-old

Aligarh, June 23: A team of Aligarh Muslim University’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Department of Neurosurgery surgeons led by Dr Raman Sharma under the guidance of Professor V K Shrivastav, Chairman, Department of Neurosurgery and Dr Fakhrul Huda performed a successful Brainstem Glioma surgery on a six-year-old girl.

“It was a complicated surgery with high chances of patient dying or going on a prolong ventilator requirement,” said Prof Shrivastav. However, the surgeons took three-and-a-half hours to successfully perform the surgery, further said Prof Shrivastav. He confirmed that the patient has recovered without any fresh deficit.

After the surgery, the girl is receiving radiotherapy in the medical college and will be discharged soon, said Prof Shrivastav.

He added that the patient was earlier suffering facial weakness, causing asymmetry or drooping of saliva due to the Brainstem Glioma condition.

Prof Shrivastav further said that the patient also reported problems in eye movement or eyelids, such as inability to gaze to the side and drooping eyelids.

“She was having trouble in swallowing, or gagging while eating with limb weakness and difficulty in walking or standing,” also confirmed Prof Shrivastav.

A JNMC Anesthesia team led by Prof Shahla Haleem including Dr Obaid Ahmed Siddiqui assisted the case.

While expressing happiness for the surgery’s success, JNMC, CMS and Principal, Prof Tariq Mansoor congratulated the team of surgeons for performing the complicated and difficult surgery. He stated that it is a proud moment for JNMC as these cases are usually referred to New Delhi based hospitals but now JNMC surgeons are easily performing these surgeries.
