How to lose weight? Dr Mohd Aslam wins project to cure obesity
Aligarh: Dr Mohd Aslam, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University has recently been sanctioned a three-year project worth Rs 24, 72, 696 to work on the treatment of obesity by the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India (Department of Ayush).
With the sanction, Dr Aslam will be working on a collaborative project on â€˜A Randomized Clinical trial to Study the Effect of Safoof Muhazzil on Biomarkers of Obesity.â€™ In a break-up of the total money to be used in the project, Dr Aslam will use Rs 8, 14, 534 in the first year. He will use Rs 9, 52, 598 and Rs 7, 05, 564 in the second and third years respectively.
Dr Aslam, who is the principle investigator in the project, said that since obesity is the most common nutrition disorder, it is increasing at an alarming rate throughout the globe over the past two decades.
â€œObesity is directly linked to metabolic syndrome resulting in significant morbidity and mortality,â€ said Dr Aslam adding that measures to curb obesity are a thrust area for research.
Lamenting on the drug to be used on subjects during the project, Dr Aslam pointed out that â€˜Oristat,â€™ a drug designed to treat obesity and bringing weight loss on the subjects will be used.
He further said that if the use of â€˜Safoof Muhazzilâ€™ is found safe on obese subjects, it will be a breakthrough.
â€œSafoof Muhazzil will also act as a preventive measure for various diseases linked to metabolic syndrome thereby reducing very common causes of morbidity and mortality in present era,â€ also said Dr Aslam.
