Geminid meteor shower: How to watch the natural spectacle tonight?

chelyabinsk_meteor 2013Geminid meteor shower: How to watch the natural spectacle tonight?

Geminid meteor shower is going to light up the sky tonight and you will be able to enjoy a spectacle that you will probably treasure throughout the year. Geminids are the best meteors and this year weather lets you have a great show.

Moon is remarkably darker now and this fact alone allows you to have very clear view of the meteors. Had the moon been very bright it would have made watching the meteors falling from the sky a very strenuous job.

Then there are reports that these years, meteor showers have become brighter than in the past. According to the Royal Astronomy Society, the Geminid meteor shower has gotten more intense in recent years because the gravitational influence of Jupiter and Saturn has shifted a denser debris stream closer to our planet.

There are reports that the Geminid meteor shower will send up to 100 meteors per hour. The best thing about this round of meteor shower is the fact that these falling ‘stars’ can be viewed in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Because the pieces are from an asteroid, the meteoroids are able to penetrate deeper into the earth’s atmosphere, making them visible to the naked eye for a few seconds.

A report says that the Geminids received their name because they radiate from the constellation of Gemini. Another report by US space agency NASA says that Geminids are pieces of debris from 3200 Pantheon, an extinct comet once thought to be an asteroid. Of all of the debris systems Earth passes through each year, this shower is the most massive, outweighing other streams by factors of 5 to 500.
