One of the best scientists that India has ever produced, APJ Abdul Kalam, is no more. The scientist who rose to become India’s President and served it in that capacity for five years died today doing what he did best, teaching and talking about knowledge. He was 84.

The former President reportedly collapsed while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong. He was presiding over the function where he was the chief guest.

Agency reports suggest that the former President who was one of the most popular figures in the country till his last moment collapsed during a lecture at IIM Shillong at a function where he was a guest faculty member. He was rushed to Bethany hospital in Shillong.

kalamIf reports are to be believed Kalam suffered a massive cardiac arrest at the function. It was this morning that the former President Kalam had taken to Twitter to announce his visit to Shillong to attend an event.

He belonged to a poor Muslim family in Tamil Nadu. He was born and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. Kalam studied physics and aerospace engineering and went on to serve as the President of India from 2002 to 2007 and was awarded the nation’s top civilian awards, including Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Bharat Ratna.

Abdul Kalam was in the driving seat for four decades as far as the nation’s space and rocket science is concerned. He worked as scientist and science administrator, at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He was the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Prime and the Secretary of the DRDO from 1992 to 199. The Pokhran II nuclear tests were conducted during this period.
