Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Manny Pacquiao May 2 fight threatened due to doping penalty
Are we going to see a repeat of what happened in the year 2010? At that time Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao were more or less prepared to fight against each other in the ring. But two issues derailed the fight. First was the distribution of proceeds of the fight and the other one was doping issue.
While the first issue seems to have been resolved this time as both the fighters have agreed on 60-40 formula. Sixty percent revenue of the fight is going to be collected by Floyd Mayweather Jr while the rest of the forty percent will be collected by the Filipino boxer Maynny Pacquiao who is also two times senator in the Philippines Congress.
None the less, the second issue seems to be rearing its ugly head once again. In fact that issue has become so much serious that the camps of both the boxers seem to be poles apart on the issue.
Manny Pacquiao camp has come out with a doping penalty clause in case any of the fighters is found to have used some banned substance or drug. Michael Koncz, a Manny Pacuqio camp member was quoted by the Los Angeles Times he was “a little puzzled and dismayed” that Mayweather wouldn’t agree to the $5 million penalty that Manny Pacquiao had proposed.
Mayweather camp, on the other hand says that this penalty was completely out of question as the issue had already been discussed and settled. Mayweather Promotions chief executive Leonard Ellerbe, said that the drug testing protocol for the May 2 fight has been completely settled and that there was no place for further talks.
Mayweather has said that random Olympic-style blood urine testing should be followed in the fight. Last time when the talks fell apart Mayweather accused Manny Pacquiao of using performance-enhancing drugs, a charge which Pacquiao denied. Later the issue was settled out of court. Floyd Mayweather has voluntarily submitted to USADA testing for all of his bouts since 2010
A Mayweather camp member said that this was just a publicity stunt. “If this moron didn’t convey his fighter’s wishes when the negotiation was going on that’s their problem…This is a lame-ass attempt to generate publicity†he said.
