Fierce clashes between Houthis, gov’t forces in S. Yemen
SANAA: Fierce clashes are reportedly taking place Tuesday between the Houthi rebels backed by security and military forces on one side, and army troops and popular committees of the South loyal to President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, causing casualties.
Clashes took place between the two sides in the area of Karsh, which is located on the highway linking the provinces of Taiz and Aden, a local source in the Lahj province told KUNA.
The two sides used medium and heavy weapons in the fighting, and then exchanged fire by artillery and rocket launchers, killing and wounding many persons, he said.
A medical source from Al-Rahda area, close to the confrontation area, said the Houthis brought three bodies to the hospital in Al-Rahda while the wounded were taken to other hospitals in Taiz.
A military source in Lahj, in a statement to KUNA, said Defense Minister Mahmoud Al-Asbahi was commanding the operations launched by the army and the popular committees against the Houthis.
There were sporadic clashes taking place in Al-Dhale’ province killing and wounding many people.
The Houthis have seized control of the province of Taiz, Yemen’s third largest city, following their capture of the capital Sanaa. They are seeking to march towards Aden in the south, where internationally-recognized Hadi is staying.
