Eating disorders among men seem to be neglected: Study

A recent study claims that eating disorders among men is becoming very common. The study also concludes that it is actually neglected among men while it is taken rather very seriously in case of women.

As many as 320,000 people are admitted to hospitals in the US alone due to bulimia, anorexia and muscle dysmorphia each year.

The new study claims that men with eating disorders don’t get the sort of attention that other diseases or even eating disorders among women receive.

Experts claim that this is due to the fact that eating disorder seems to have been taken as much more concerned with women compared to men.

obesity in US kidsThere has been a sudden sport of men suffering from eating disorders. The report claims that eating disorder among men has gone up by as much as 63 percent in the last five years alone.

But things may change in the coming days as the problem is coming under increased focus. According to a spokesman of Beat, a charity focused on men with eating disorders, “Given that there is still a great deal of stigma and misunderstanding around eating disorders in general, men in particular find it difficult to seek help. Specialist treatment is also mainly geared around females and getting help can seem like an overwhelmingly impossible task.”

To be true it is a tricky issue for many. “Nowadays younger men are becoming more vulnerable to disliking their bodies and seeking to reshape them, and many lack the skills to discuss their feelings” says Beat. In addition, the Beat added that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness – with up to 20 per cent of those affected dying prematurely. “We know that, if left untreated, eating disorders are devastating,” Norman Lamb concluded. Lamb is a Lib Dem support and care minister.
