Dept of History conducts three-day National Seminar

Aligarh: The Centre of Advanced study, Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University today started a three-day National Seminar on ‘Ideas, Traditions and Cultural Values in Medieval India‘ with the inaugural session at the Faculty of Arts Lounge.

While presiding over the function, Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin (retd) highlighted the beauty of India’s culture, which grew as a result of amalgamation of various foreign cultures integrating and assimilating with the Hindustani culture.

The Vice Chancellor praised the strength and technical advancement of architecture during the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughals and the British rule.

He pointed out that buildings during the life time of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan are a beautiful blend of Islamic, British and Hindustani styles of architecture.

AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (retd), who attended the function as the Chief Guest talked about the building traditions from Qutbuddin Aibek to the architecture during the Mughal period. He remarked that music, literature and other fine arts developed during this period.

“However, painting took time to draw attention of the Delhi Sultanate rulers and got full growth during the Mughal period,” said the Pro Vice Chancellor.

Professor Ali Athar, Chairperson and Coordinator of the seminar said that the Indian culture as an amalgamation of several cultures, spans across the Indian subcontinent and has been influenced by a history that is several millennia old with many elements of India’s diverse cultures, such as Indian religions, Indian philosophy and Indian cuisine, have had a profound impact across the world.

A galaxy of academicians and scholars including Professor S Ayub Ali, Kakatiya University; Prof Amit De, Calcutta University; Prof C M Agarwal, Kumaoun University; Dr Etee Bahadur, Jamia Millia Islamia; Dr Tasneem Suhrawardi, Delhi University; drDr Sandhya Sharma, Delhi University, Dr Saifuddin Ahmad, Delhi University; Dr Tabir Kalam, Banaras Hindu Universit, Dr Tariq Anwar, Delhi University and Dr Husain Ranthandani from Kerala are attending the seminar.
