Dennis Hastert sex scandal: Why he wanted to pay $3.5 million to ex student?

YORKVILLE, Ill: Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, a Republican stalwart’s whereabouts are not known following allegations of his sexual misconduct some four decades ago make headlines across the world.

There are allegations that Dennis Hastert was trying to hide a huge payment of hush money to a male student he had sexually molested. Reports suggest that the money involved was to the tune of $3.5 million and his cash withdrawal was so much suspicious that FBI had to conduct an inquiry into it.

Allegations suggest that a leading Republican leader, Hastert, was trying to hide this particular act that he allegedly committed while he was a teacher and wrestling coach in Illinois in early eighties. Officials claim that the victim whom they have already spoken was one of Hastert’s students. A report in the Washington Tribune said that officials talked to another person who also raised similar allegations.US senate building

Nonetheless the longest serving Republican speaker in House history may not have to face molestation charges due to the fact that it is around four decades when it happened and law enforcement agencies may not have enough evidence against him.

Prosecutors who announced the charges this past Thursday said that the charges were related to Hastert’s alleged effort to hide $3.5 million in payments he was making to a person to conceal past misconduct but did not detail the nature of the misconduct.

When asked why he was making the payments, the official cited by the Los Angeles Times told the paper it was intended to conceal Hastert’s past relationship with the male. “It was sex,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. An official quoted by the Los Angeles Times said the abuse took place during Hastert’s time as a high school teacher in Yorkville, Illinois, which ran from 1965 to 1981 before he became a lawmaker.
