Copa America 2015 scores, highlights: Peru beats Bolivia 3-1

As expected, Peru got the better of Bolivia in the ongoing Copa America 2015 tournament. In one of the very important quarterfinal matches of the tournament, Peru easily outclassed Bolivia 3-1 to reach semifinals.

But the whole credit for the win must go to a single player whose daredevil attitude led his side to historic win. It was actually Peru striker Paolo Guerrero whose hat-trick was behind the massive win for his team.

Now the Peruvian team will have to take on the hosts, Chile, in the semifinals. And there are signs that the team Chile will not be as easily intimidated as the Bolivian team. They have a huge advantage of playing on their soil amidst thousands of cheering fans who are enough to destroy the morale of the other team in any given situation.copa america

This was one of the best performance by Guerrero, who has spent the past 3 years in Brazil after spells in Germany with Hamburg and Bayern Munich. He scored in the 20th and 23rd minutes, dashing Bolivia’s hope of making it to the semifinal. The striker completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute. On the other hand, Marcelo Martins scored a late consolation goal from the penalty spot for Bolivia.

Both the teams have long standing animosity when it comes to soccer field. The matches between the two teams are actually known as the “Clasico del Pacifico,” laced with a historical hostility that dates back to 1879-1883 War of the Pacific. Peru and Chile also fought a long-running legal battle over the two nations’ disputed maritime border. Guerrero scored the first goal in the 20th minute, timing his jump to head home past Bolivia goalkeeper Romel Quinonez after a brilliant cross from the left by Fiorentina midfielder Juan Manuel Vargas. 3 minutes later, the striker made it 2-0 after a breakout from Peru which had begun with a Bolivia free-kick on the edge of their opponents area.

Bolivia despite playing some good soccer failed to win the match. And this must be due to the lone hero of the match who changed its course rather easily. Midfielder Christian Cueva kicked the ball over the top of the Bolivian defense to send Guerrero bearing down on goal. Quinonez hesitated as he advanced off his line and Guerrero tucked away a low finish to put Peru firmly in control. Bolivia gave themselves a lifeline on 31 minutes but Martins was denied after a fine close-range reflex save by Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. However, Peru did not take long to get back on track, and only the woodwork foiled Jefferson Farfan when his long-range effort cannoned back off the post on 37 minutes with Quinonez beaten.
