Confederate flag and merchandises based on it will become history as far as Walmart stores are concerned. The largest retail chain in the US has decided to discontinue selling any product based on Confederate flag.
Slaves and their exploitation is part of the history that may look like very shocking for the new generation not just in the modern day US, but also in Africa from where millions and millions of slaves were herded and brought to the continent.
The world cannot believe that so close to the modern world, we exploited so many people so harshly without giving them basic rights as human beings. Slaves were treated worse than animals and they were not taken as humans and many remained chained for years. Many will not believe that slavery was still a common sight in much of America till late nineteenth century.
Confederate flag is the most visible sigh of the slave holding South. The announcement is the latest indication that the flag has become unbearable in the modern day America. It has become all the more toxic in the aftermath of a shooting last week at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina that killed as many as nine Black Americans.
Many people have welcomed South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley announcement yesterday that she supports removing the Confederate flag from the state capitol grounds.
In the meantime the largest retail chain in the US, Walmart has said that it will not sell the Confederate flag as well as attire featuring the flag’s design, such as T-shirts and belt buckles. â€œWe never want to offend anyone with the products that we offer. We have taken steps to remove all items promoting the confederate flag from our assortment — whether in our stores or on our web siteâ€¦We have a process in place to help lead us to the right decisions when it comes to the merchandise we sell. Still, at times, items make their way into our assortment improperly — this is one of those instancesâ€ Walmart spokesman Brian Nick said.
An Atlantic report while talking about the Confederate flag meaning says, ” The Confederate flag is directly tied to the Confederate cause, and the Confederate cause was white supremacy. This claim is not the result of revisionism. It does not require reading between the lines. It is the plain meaning of the words of those who bore the Confederate flag across history. These words must never be forgotten.”
