Chile earthquake 2015 news and latest update: tsunami warning issued for California, Hawaii in USA
More than a million people have already been evacuated and the evacuation is still underway as a massive 8.3 magnitude earthquake hit Chile. The fact that the massive temblor came in densely populated area seems to have made things all the more worrying for the residents and authorities.
But there was more fear among residents when the tsunami advisories were issued. Many people in faraway places including in Hawaii and California were fearing for the worst.
When the massive 8.3-magnitude earthquake struck Chile, the tumbler generated almost 16-foot wave. It prompted local government officials in Chile to evacuate as many as 1 million people. Latest reports suggest that many people living in far away communities too were leaving their homes with their precious possessions.
Chilean Undersecretary of the Interior Mahmud Aleuy told the media â€œThe first thing we want to say is that we regret the deaths of five Chilean citizensâ€.
United States Geological Survey reports suggest that the quake had a depth of 25 kilometers (15.5 miles), the USGS said. Following the reports of massive waves building in nearby seas, Chile’s national emergency agency issued a tsunami alert, ordering evacuations in coastal areas from Arica to Puerto Aysen.
Media reports from Chilean capital Santiago suggest that massive tsunami waves washed along the Chilean coast near the quake’s epicenter. In Coquimbo, a 15.6-foot wave became the largest to land on the shores of Chile, according to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning center.
Meanwhile in the US tsunami warnings were issued for Northern California and Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties warned residents to stay away from beaches and harbors due to the chances of strong currents.
