Zimbabwe police have sought an American man for killing of Cecil the lion, one of the celebrated lions from Zimbabwe. The killing of the lion has been widely condemned in Zimbabwe by both official media and general public. The news on the other hand has gone on to make headlines across the world.

In the meantime, the man who is suspected in the killing of the Cecil the lion has been identified as Walter James Palmer of Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The man was found and recognized by Zimbabwean officials including Johnny Rodrigues, head of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.

While the accusations against Walter James Palmer have been spreading thick and fast for killing the best lion in Zimbabwe, the beast’s pictures have gone viral on social networking sites. Reports suggest that the 13-year old lion was the most favorite lion of the visitors in the country’s Hwange National Park.

The importance of the lion can be gauged by the fact that it was a participant in a study that Oxford University in Britain was conducting, and he had been outfitted with a GPS collar.

In the meantime at least two Zimbabwe nationals have been apprehended by police officials who are searching for the killer.cecil the lion killed

Meanwhile officials have released more details about the hunter. An official told the court that Palmer was an American and gave his passport number and street address, but police were more vague. Charity Charamba, a Zimbabwe police spokeswoman, said police were seeking Palmer, “who might be an American or a Spaniard.”

Meanwhile Palmer has said that he was innocent as he said hunting was done legally. “To my knowledge, everything about this trip was legal and properly handled and conducted…I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study until the end of the hunt. I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt”, he said in a statement. Zimbabwe official says the hunter paid $50,000 to a safari guide, a fortune in this impoverished nation.
