Biggest ever asteroid in Australia is unprecedented
Asteroids have always amazed humans. And as biggest ever asteroid impact is found, the whole world seems to be talking about it and nothing else. Researchers have found the imprints of a huge asteroid in the famed Warburton Basin.
They believe that the finding is going to help them get more details about the impacts of asteroids and their formation. Besides, they believe this will help them unravel the mysteries of composition of the asteroid rocks.
Researchers are of the view that the massive 250-mile area is hidden deep inside the earth’s crust and consists of two separate impact scars. Researchers belonging to the Australian National University (ANU), said that they are sure that the massive asteroid actually split into two parts before it hit the spot. They are of the opinion that both the parts fell around than 10km apart. But this happened neither now , nor a hundred or two hundred years.
According to Australian National University researchers this happened around 300 million years ago. It is amazing to know that the surface crater can no longer be found at central Australia’s Warburton Basin but geophysical modelling below the surface found evidence of two massive impacts.
While talking about the findings the lead researcher of the study Dr Andrew Glikson says, “It would have been curtains for many life species on the planet at the time…It’s a mystery – we can’t find an extinction event that matches these collisions…I have a suspicion the impact could be older than 300 million years.”
Researchers also claim that the rocks around the impact zone are extremely old, around 300 to 600 million years old. They also claim that despite this fact they haven’t been able to find the layer of ash that would have been thrown up by the impact. “Large impacts like these may have had a far more significant role in the Earth’s evolution than previously thoughtâ€, says the lead researcher.
