AMU’s Dept of Geography holding workshop on Research Methodology in Social Science

Aligarh: The Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University with a sponsorship of Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi is organizing a 10 days Workshop on Research Methodology in Social Science. The workshop will take place from November 14 to November 24.

Registered social science Phd students of various Indian universities and research institutes will be participating in the workshop.

Meanwhile, Course Director, Professor Nizamuddin Khan informed that the backward community and regions candidates with basic knowledge of and computer application will be preferred for training in the workshop.

He further informed that out of 30 seats for training in the workshop, 20 seats have been reserved for participants from outstation students.

Prof Khan added that the workshop is designed to impart knowledge for scientific research to integrate qualitative and quantitative approaches in research. “The workshop will orient the young researchers to new advance techniques for precise, rational and scientific research,” said Prof Khan adding that the workshop also aims to train the scholars with advance statistical packages including SPSS for using in various fields and sub fields of social sciences.

He also said that the training is particularly for scholars with basic knowledge of data processing, analysis and interpretation and who are engaged in survey research.

Prof Shamsul Haque Siddiqui, Chairman, Department of Geography pointed out that an important purpose of the training programme is to help scholars with some of the basic features of computerized database management and the use of computers in data analysis and data interpretation.

He added that the course will have a combination of theoretical lectures and practical experience on computers and some commonly available computer applications for both quantitative and qualitative analysis of data.

“The participants will be given some research project and the data generated for application of various statistical concepts and techniques, from simple univariate to more complex multivariate techniques of data analysis,” said Prof Siddiqui, who added that both Excel and SPSS would be used for data processing and analysis.

Dr Mumtaz Ahmad, Course Co-Director said that the course will be operated through theoretical lectures and practical application of different research modules and statistical techniques.

He added that the participants would be provided some generated data and computers for application of discussed research methodology.

“Group participation, field survey as well as paper writing techniques will place in the program,” said Dr Ahmad.
The Department of Geography has also informed that the students interested in participating can apply to Course Director Professor Nizamuddin Khan along with duly filled up registration form on or before 15 October 2015.

“The candidates are required to send the form duly forwarded by the Phd supervisor and head of the department to the email ID: followed by hard copy of the application. Registration form can also be downloaded from the university website” stated a notice on the programme.
