As promised and predicted, CES 2012 is seeing a plethora of ultra-books and the most attractive of them all has turned out to be Acer Aspire S5.

So far Aspire S5 is “the world’s thinnest ultra-book.” At its thickest point it measures 15mmand weighs 1.35 kg. Acer likes to describe it as having a “delicately curved chassis in onyx black.” Normally put, it has a sturdy magnesium-aluminium alloy cover in a decent black.

The ultra-book features an Intel Core processor, SSD storage, Dolby Home Theater v4 technology, and a PowerSmart battery pack. There is an added “magical I/O port panel” hidden under the hinge. A button opens this panel to reveal HDMI, USB 3.0, and Thunderbolt ports. It also has onboard the Acer Green Instant On and Acer Always Connect technology that reduces boot and resume time and makes managing data superfast.

S5 is rumoured to start shipping in the second quarter of 2012, and will hit the markets by April-May.

S5 has a 13.3-inch screen and gives 8 to 10 hours of battery life. Though the battery life is very impressive, but the display was found to be rather mediocre.

Acer has also launched AcerCloud. This service syncs photos, music, and documents across devices. SlashGear added that AcerCloud will be open to PC and Android devices on the whole. It will use the company’s Clear.fi branding for its syncing apps. Acer confirmed that it will include the service on all of its consumer PCs starting in the second quarter of this year.

Jim Wong, president of Acer Inc., said, “The Ultrabook is much more than just a product segment. It’s a new trend that will become the mainstream for mobile PCs, and customers will see the unique features gradually extended across Acer’s notebook family.”

S5 runs on the latest Intel second generation or the upcoming Intel 3rd generation Ivy Bridge CPU. It comes loaded with Windows 7. It boasts up to 8GB DDR3 RAM and storage speed is said to be SSD.

S5 also has the usual bulit-in microphone and webcam and has Dolby Home Theater audio, but the audio is said to be rather mediocre. The keyboard is the glamorously named Chiclet keyboard.

Its connectivity features are the Wireless LAN WiFi b/g/n , Gigabit Ethernet LAN and Bluetooth v3.0.
