It was a film that was expected to break all previous records. And Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 vs Chennai Express vs Krrish 3 box office collection war suggests that this seems entirely true now as the film has come with amazing collection figures in the last three days.
On the first day it broke the highest grossing opening day record of Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express. Compared to Chennai Express’ Rs 33 crore collection, Aamir Khan’s latest film grossed as much as Rs 36 crore. On day 2 Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express collection had gone down considerably to around Rs 26 crore. Though Dhoom 3 day 2 collection too went down too, nonetheless the drop was nominal as it still collected as much as Rs 33.5 crore.
But the biggest surprise was reserved for the third day. On Sunday Dhoom 3 recorded mind boggling collection. Its day 3 box office collection went up by as much as Rs 44 crore. Some great films that do reasonably well actually earn this much amount in their entire box office journeys while others don’t do even this much. So the three day box office collection of Aamir Khan’s film was as high as Rs 113 crore.
Even before the launch of his film, the Mr perfectionist, Aamir Khan had said to the whole world that he is not worried about numbers, but numbers is what Dhoom 3 is all about, in terms of box office collection. The film has shown wonderful box office collections in the first two days though it is being widely panned by critics.
His latest film that is expected to gross more than Rs 300 crore box office collection stars Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Uday Chopra and Jackie Shroff. The film has been released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions. The two day collection of Dhoom 3 is estimated to be Rs 69.58 crore, which ius just 30.42 crore shy of the Rs 1000 crore mark. This being the holiday season and vacations just beginning for Christmas, the film is expected to cross this mark very soon. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh had tweeted, “Dhoom 3- All Languages Saturday Hindi ₹31.25 Cr Tamil & Telugu ₹2.11 Cr Total ₹33.36 crore.”
The film comes with spectacular work by actors and the directors. This is the first hindi film to be released in the Imax version. The third outing in the Dhoom (Blast) franchise is the first Indian film to be released in IMAX theaters, including in India. As of Sunday, the movie is playing in 40 Imax locations in 14 territories, including a handful of sites in India and 12 locations in the U.S., where it is splitting screens with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
Though many critics are not very happy with the film, they must be feeling exposed by the stupendous success of Aamir Khan film. On the other hand IMAX Entertainment CEO Greg Foster informed that Dhoom 3 is the widest release in IMAX history for a non-Hollywood title. Noting the average collection from each nearing $25,000, Foster expects more theaters to be added. He said, “This was a fantastic movie by very skilled filmmakers and we’re thrilled that this is our first venture into the Bollywood world. Given its success, we’ll be doing more. The film is said to be reaping the benefits of high ticket price, release on the highest number of screens (45000), and a strict marketing strategy. Let’s wait till the end of the week and then count the money for Aamir Khan.
