The United States is a unique country in many ways. When Pentagon and Twin Towers were struck by terrorists on September 11, 2001 not a single Muslims living there were killed. In contrast a couple of Sikhs were shot dead because they reportedly resembled Osama Bin Laden and were mistaken for Muslims.

True there were cases of harassment of many Muslim men, women and children yet that was not to the point of the loss of lives. The Americans saw to it that Muslims were not killed or harmed as after all those living within the country’s boundary were their citizens or their guests––if they had come from abroad to work or study.

But then there is another side of the story too. They compensated the ‘loss’ suffered in the attacks on Defence Ministry (Pentagon) and World Trade Centre by virtually deleting two Muslim countries from the map of the world––Afghanistan and Iraq. Millions of innocent lives––obviously of Muslims––were lost in the most barbaric revenge ever taken in the history of humankind. From old men and women to the young babies in mothers’ lap all were silenced for ever for the crime they never committed. This is a way a ‘civilized’ nation takes revenge.

But then over the years individual cases of targeting especially Asians continued. Once again Sikhs were the primary target. There was no reason whatsoever to target a Sikh gurdwara in which about half a dozen were killed last summer. A White supremacist was involved in this senseless killing.

Another hate crime––no less bizarre indeed––was committed on Dec 27 last in New York when a woman Erica Menendez, 31, pushed an Indian, Sunando Sen, on the track when a train was about to come on the plea that “I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the Twin Towers.” She said she has been beating them up ever since then.

Crime committed by any criminal or drug-addict is understandable, but a hate crime of such nature and magnitude and that too committed apparently by a normal woman seems to be shocking.

Committing a hate crime against a Muslim can be, rightly or wrongly justified––though it is a fact that American Muslims are in general as law abiding citizens as any other community. Vicious propaganda against the community or misplaced revenge for 9/11 may be attributed to such an act by any man or woman against any Muslim.

But why hate Hindus and Sikhs to the extent of killing them. True culturally they come from a different world, but then there is no media campaign against them––as in the case of Muslims. In fact Hindus and Sikhs have been living in the country for decades and have always been supportive of the United States.

How can an educated and enlightened society like that of the United States produce such parochial and narrow-minded men and women. Many among them still hates Blacks, but then they now desist from doing physical harm to ehm as they fear backlash.

What is more tragic is that this lady has no remorse after pushing an innocent man before a running train for no rhyme or reason.
