It was expected to be among the highest grossing films, but Besharam’s box office collection has barely crossed Rs 50 crore mark. Ranbir Kapoor film has proved to be huge disaster.
Besharam was expected to do better than Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, another Ranbir Kapoor film released earlier this year. It was a super hit and the film’s box office success catapulted Ranbir Kapoor to the big league of top paid heroes. His signing amount went up by many times in a matter of weeks.
And when the new film was introduced in theaters on national holiday –the same way Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express was launched on Eid holidays –many thought that the film was going to immediately break the first day collection record of Chennai Express. Though it didn’t, its first day collection of Rs 21 crore was still the second highest. This was still very good and hopes remained high that the film was on its way to be a smashing mega hit.
But the second day collection gave a shock to the filmmakers, financers and Ranbir Kapoor fans. It had gone down by as much as seventy percent and the day 2 box office collection of the film was down to just Rs 7 crore. The slide apparently never stopped and failed to create any noise even on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and box office collection never went up.
Now after more than a week, the film’s collection remains a ‘meager’ Rs 50 Crore. I am saying ‘meagre’ as it was made with a budget of around Rs 60 crore and was launched in around 3600 screens in India alone, the largest release for any Indian film thus far. Besides Ranbir Kapoor the film also stars Pallavi Sharda, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. Latest reports suggest that due to poor performance most of the theater owners have dropped the film and more are going to do the same in a couple of days.
