The two teams have been fierce enemies on soccer fields for decades. And the enmity is not just one or two decades old, but goes back to mid last century when Uruguay caused a huge upset by beating Brazil in World Cup final in the year 1950. The day is still etched in the minds of Brazilian soccer players and fans. Last night they didn’t want to see a repetition of what happened in 1950. So Brazilians were cautious and aggressive.
The match was very well fought and no team was really ready to allow an easy outing in the filed. But finally Brazil won the match 2-1 behind goals from Fred and Paulinho, and thus advanced to the final where they are expected to take on the winner of Spain vs Brazil semi final match.
The two teams are winners of seven soccer world cup between them and have bitter memories of their tough contests and upsets in last more than sixty years. But right now Uruguay are not as strong a team as Brazil as the hosts have shown throughout the Confederations Cup 2013. Nonetheless they had many aces upto their sleeves. Uruguay won a penalty when David Luiz manhandled Diego Lugano in the box. Diego Forlan, the Golden Ball-winning hero of Uruguay’s run to the 2010 World Cup semis, stepped up for the kick in the 14th minute. Forlan placed his low shot to Julio Cesar’s left-hand corner, but Cesar stretched at full length to parry the ball around the post.
To be true, it the beginning of the match it was Uruguay that dominated. But just before the halftime, Brazil came up with a shocking goal that amazed many of their own fans. Neymar ran onto a long ball over the top from Paulinho in the 41st minute, forcing Fernado Muslera to save from a tight angle. Fred reached the rebound first in a chaotic box and appeared to mishit his shot into the far corner. And after the first goal, Uruguay seem to have run out of steam. Though Edinson Cavani equalizer in the 48th minute gave them some hope, but they seem to have spent their energy in the first half of the match and they never came out of the fatigue. Nonetheless they didn’t allow Brazil to manage any more glas till the 86th minute when Paulinho towered to drive his header into the net. This was the end of Uruguay’s resistance and they failed to equal the 2-1 lead taken by Brazil.
