20,000 EU civil servants on strike in protest against reforms
BRUSSELS: About 20,000 civil servants working in the EU Council and the EU Commission Wednesday began a 3-day strike to protest against job and pay cuts.
“The proposed reform of employment conditions has been concocted behind closed doors without any consultation or involvement of the staff representatives,” said a press release distributed by the three trade unions who have organised the strike.
“This constitutes a dangerous precedent for employment law and employees in any democratic state,” it stressed.
A career in the EU institutions has become unattractive due to the budget and staff cuts, it said.
The strike, the eighth in recent months, coincides with an EU summit on Thursday and Friday. However, essential staff will be working so as not to disrupt the summit, said the strikers.(KUNA)
