Barack Obama and his administration are in a piquant situation over the spending cuts. Republicans are unconvinced, while the President and his administration are trying to impress upon the general public the need to avoid these imminent cuts in government spending. White House is trying to convince the public if this really happens, it will not just affect the government functions, but also impact many public services that are needed to be kept going at any cost.
But the opposition figures remain unconvinced accusing the President and his administration of trying to present a far worse case scenario to the public in order to gain its sympathy. They say that the just $85 billion cut will do no harm to government functioning or services being provided to general public. Government had tried to suggest that the $85 billion cut in government spending will affect some healthcare services besides of course surveillance at its borders with neighbors. But Republican officials have flatly refused to buy this government argument saying it is not going to affect anything. Senior Republican figure and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal mocks at White House argument. “There is a responsible way to cut less than 3 percent of the federal budget. It’s time for the president to show leadership…The president needs to stop campaigning, stop trying to scare the American people”, says Jindal.

Earlier Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano had said that spending cuts will impact maintaining security in the country. “I don’t think we can maintain the same level of security at all places around the country with sequester”, had clearly said. But this was seen by Republicans as a way to pressurize the opposition.
Another Republican stalwart Cathy McMorris Rodgers said that the cuts will not impact anything important and added, “The Republicans, almost 300 days ago, put forward our place to replace these cuts with smarter reforms, smarter cuts…What we need is for the president to get off the campaign trail, quit talking about cutting taxes”.
Meanwhile people are concerned about this shadowboxing between White House and Republicans. A reader says, “This is absolutely ridiculous. Does Obama truly think the level of debt he is racking up is sustainable? I realize he wants to stimulate the economy, but all he’s doing is putting the US in a position that is unrecoverable. He received his tax increases and the Republicans met him on those. He needs to hold up his part of the deal and now let the spending cuts occur. This is crazy”. Others too are voicing similar sentiments.
